rearise, Markheim bounded from behind upon his victim. The long, skewer-like dagger flashed and fell. The dealer struggled like a hen, striking his temple on the shelf, and then tumbled on the floor in a heap. First published in 1885 in an annual aimed at the Christmas market, the Robert Louis Stevenson story "Markheim" was an unlikely candidate for such a volume. True, the story is set on Christmas day, it opens with an ostensible quest for a last-minute present, and there is an encounter with the supernatural. But this is no pleasantly spine-tingling ghost story; rather it is a complex study of the problem of good and evil. Two literary techniques, atmosphere and the use of the Doppelgänger or double, are notable in “Markheim.” Most of the story is taken up by Markheim’s inner conflict in coping with his guilt and the "Markheim" is a short story by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson that contains elements of crime fiction, horror and supernatural fantasy and also includes philosophical musings on the nature of good and evil. Stevenson wrote the story in 1884, intending it for publication in the London evening newspaper The Pall Mall Gazette. It did not, however, appear in that newspaper.

Stevenson masterfully brings images to life. Markheim is a tale about a thief after he commits the crime. The torment in his mind , the tension outside symbolized by ticking of multiple clocks, splattering rain, thumbing footsteps, strange noises creates a tumultuous enviornment. When he is about to step outside to escape , a queer visitor arrives.
It superficially resembles a Christian tale of repentance, but I doubt whether the author had this in mind.
